Behind the Screen

This accordion-fold picture book takes internet addiction as its central theme, offering a thoughtful exploration of the psychological and physical consequences of excessive reliance on the digital world in contemporary society. Through a dual narrative structure that contrasts the "Inner World" with the "Outer World," the book reveals the often-overlooked harms of compulsive internet use.

The "Inner World" represents a vivid, fantastical virtual realm—a metaphor for the user's psychological immersion in cyberspace. In this world, the characters are bright, charming, and whimsical, reflecting the fleeting pleasures and escapist allure the internet provides. In contrast, the "Outer World" grounds the viewer in physical reality, where the toll of internet addiction is starkly visible. Here, the illustrations depict the deterioration of physical health through symbolic yet recognizable imagery: spinal deformities, severe acne, impaired vision, and emotional numbness—all consequences of prolonged neglect of the body in favor of digital indulgence.

By juxtaposing these two worlds, the book not only visualizes the duality of online life versus real life but also encourages readers to reconsider how to find balance between the two. The unique folding format of the book enhances both the spatial experience and narrative rhythm, allowing the viewer to unfold a deeper understanding of the theme. With its immersive visuals and layered storytelling, the picture book aims to spark meaningful reflection on the impact of technology on our physical and mental well-being.
